Veterans Day Tribute

For those who know anyone who has been or is currently in the military, Veterans Day can be an emotional time. I, personally, have four cousins, one uncle, two grandparents, and one father-in-law who have been involved in the military dating back to World War II. However, I was either too young or too uninvolved to be emotionally impacted by their parts they played and, God be praised, none of them were killed during duty.

Although my father-in-law didn't fight for the US, he fought alongside US soldiers during the Vietnam War. I wondered if he celebrated Veterans Day or if he has any veteran benefits. Khoi, my husband, told me he does not; but his dad is just so happy and grateful to be able to come to the US that he never gave it a second thought. That response is just what a noble veteran who fought for his/her country would say.

St. Peter's Student Council helped organize a special Veterans Day Mass where all honored veterans in their families with pictures, veterans who attended the Mass were recognized, and a flag folding ceremony was presented.

Having tangible pictures for all to see along with allowing students to see the impact of their family members was powerful. Father Bedient gave a heart-warming and moving homily about those who have fought for their country and the on-going recognition they deserve.

Although veterans can never be honored enough for the love they have shown their country and all who live in it, St. Peter gave a lovely tribute for them in the presence of God in our church.
