Pivotal Supreme Court Decision

During this morning's school Mass homily, Fr. Bedient brought to our attention a possibly pivotal Supreme Court case regarding abortion. He relayed the details and the importance of prayers needed for this case from Lt. Governor Mike Foley. Here are the details of the case:

"June Medical Services v. Russo (previously v. Gee) is a challenge from Louisiana abortion providers to a 2014 state law that requires abortion providers to have admitting privileges with a nearby hospital, which allows a patient to go to that hospital if they need urgent care." --Alexandra Svokos, ABCNews

Doctors being allowed to perform these abortions without access to hospitals in cases of emergency shows the lack of standards for women's health and the desperation to actively terminate innocents. If passed, this would essentially cause two of Louisiana's three abortion clinics to close because of doctors' lack of affiliations with a hospital. If this law is passed, it could also be used as precedent to reopen the Roe v. Wade case.

I'm about 30 weeks pregnant, but I felt my baby's first flutter at 15 weeks and played the punching bag as early as 19 weeks. Knowing that my little ball of energy could have been legally killed up to around 22 weeks is almost unbearable as my husband and I are so anxious to meet our first child face-to-face.

Although we may be a long ways away from overturning Roe v. Wade, cases like West Virginia's recent Born Alive Survivors Protection Act (which saves babies who are born in the midst of an abortion) and this case bring hope that tides are changing to defend the most innocent and vulnerable among us. As June Medical Services v. Russo continues to play out, let us pray that the Supreme Court makes the right decision. In the words of Fr. Bedient's homily, let us pray that they follow "the truth" of what is right and wrong.
